  1. A pearl is a shiny, hard, rounded abnormal 
  2. growth composed of nacre (or 
  3. mother-of-pearl), a chalky substance. Nacre 
  4. is secreted by many molluscs, and deposited 
  5. in thin layers on the inside of the shell 
  6. around a parasite, a grain of sand, or some 
  7. other irritant body. After several years of 
  8. the mantle (the layer of tissue between the 
  9. shell and the body mass) secreting this 
  10. nacre, a pearl is formed.
